Creating small self-published booklets by writing, drawing, and hand-assembling pages — a liberating DIY medium for ideas, art, and stories with zero gatekeepers.

The Essentials

Steps

  • Pick a theme or topic, whether personal, political, artistic or purely absurd, since a focus keeps the pages coherent.
  • Sketch a rough layout on a single sheet, folding it into the page count you want before adding content.
  • Fill each page with writing, drawings, collage or photocopied images, mixing mediums freely.
  • Photocopy the finished pages, fold and staple them along the spine to assemble the final booklet.

Tips

  • Keep the first zine short, four to eight pages, so the whole project stays manageable.
  • Use a photocopier rather than a home printer for a cheap, authentic zine texture.
  • Trade zines with other makers or leave copies in local shops, since sharing is part of the culture.
  • Don't aim for perfection, since the raw, handmade look is part of the zine's appeal.
