Egg Drop Challenge

Egg Drop Challenge

Min number of participants 3
Age 8+ yrs.
Safety support by adult Recommended
Min duration 30 min.
Cost None (Free)
Environment Outdoor

Teams design a protective contraption from everyday materials to keep a raw egg from breaking when dropped from height — a fun engineering test of creativity and problem-solving.

The Essentials

How to play

  1. Give each team the same limited kit: a handful of straws, tape, cotton balls, newspaper, plastic bags, and one raw egg.
  2. Set a build time of 15-20 minutes for teams to design and build a protective capsule around the egg.
  3. Pick a drop height everyone will use — a second-floor window or the top of a ladder works well.
  4. Drop each capsule one at a time and check the egg immediately after landing.
  5. The team whose egg survives from the greatest height (or with the lightest capsule, if you're scoring for efficiency) wins.

Tips

  • Cushioning and shock absorption matter more than a hard shell — a rigid box that stops instantly cracks the egg just as fast as no protection at all.
  • Center the egg inside the structure so it doesn't touch any surface directly on impact.
  • Test-drop from a low height first if materials allow, to catch obvious design flaws before the real drop.
  • Great for team building: everyone has opinions about physics, and the group has to agree on one design and build it together under time pressure.
