Environment Outdoor

Ascend a mountain route equipped with fixed iron rungs, cables, and ladders bolted directly into the rock face — via ferrata offers the thrills of alpinism without technical rope skills, making dramatic cliff climbing accessible to any fit person.

The Essentials

Steps

  • Rent or bring a via ferrata kit: harness, helmet, and a Y-shaped lanyard with two energy-absorbing carabiners.
  • Clip both carabiners onto the steel cable before starting, and always keep at least one attached as you move past anchor points.
  • Move one carabiner past an anchor at a time, never unclipping both simultaneously.
  • Test each foothold and rung before committing your full weight, especially on older or wet routes.
  • Check the weather and turn back at the first sign of lightning risk — exposed cables are dangerous in storms.

Tips

  • Start with a beginner-graded route to get comfortable with the clipping rhythm before attempting harder ones.
  • Wear gloves — the steel cable can be rough on bare hands over a long route.
  • Pace yourself and rest at wider ledges rather than mid-cable sections.
  • Go with a guide or experienced partner your first time, especially on exposed alpine routes.
