Turn an old sock into a character with buttons, felt, and glue for eyes, mouth, and hair — a creative craft that results in a puppet ready for your own homemade shows.

The Essentials

Steps

  • Slide your hand into an old sock so the heel sits on top of your hand — that becomes the puppet's mouth.
  • Glue on buttons, felt scraps, or beads for eyes.
  • Add felt, yarn, or pom-poms for a nose, ears, and hair.
  • Cut a strip of red felt for a tongue and glue it inside the mouth fold.
  • Let the glue dry fully before putting your hand back in and performing.

Tips

  • Use fabric glue or a hot glue gun for a stronger hold than school glue.
  • Pick a sock with visible contrast between the heel and the rest for an easy mouth shape.
  • Keep extra buttons and felt scraps on hand so kids can build several characters in one sitting.
  • Practice moving your thumb and fingers together before the show to make the mouth talk convincingly.
