Building a gravity-powered cart from scratch with your kid, then racing it down a hill against the clock or other teams — a hands-on engineering project that ends in an adrenaline-filled, no-motor race day.

The Essentials

Rules

  • Each racer's homemade, engine-free car must roll only on gravity, starting from a stop at the top of a sloped course.
  • Every driver wears a properly fastened helmet before the car is allowed to move.
  • Cars line up side by side and are released at the same moment, and the first to cross the finish line without leaving its lane wins the heat.
  • A marshal or spotter should walk the course beforehand to check for obstacles, loose gravel, or cross-traffic.

Tips

  • Check the brakes and steering on flat ground before rolling down the actual slope for the first time.
  • Choose a closed street or a dedicated derby track rather than an open road with traffic.
  • Pad the car's frame and add extra padding around the driver's seat, since even a slow-speed roll can jolt hard on bumps.
