60-Second Commercial

60-Second Commercial

Min number of participants 6
Age 10+ yrs.
Safety support by adult Not required
Min duration 30 min.
Cost None (Free)
Environment Indoor / Outdoor

Small teams get a random (often silly) product and a few minutes to script, rehearse, and perform a one-minute TV-style commercial for it — equal parts improv comedy and team bonding.

The Essentials

How to play

  1. Split into small teams of 3-5 people and give each team a random everyday object (a stapler, a plunger, a rubber duck) as their "product."
  2. Give teams 10-15 minutes to write a short script, assign roles, and rehearse a 60-second TV-style commercial for their product.
  3. The commercial must actually be about the object — inventing a wildly unrealistic use, benefit, or backstory for it is encouraged and usually funnier.
  4. Every team member must have some role in the ad, whether acting, narrating, or handling props — nobody just stands there.
  5. Each team performs their commercial live for the whole group; applause or a quick vote decides categories like "funniest," "most convincing," and "best tagline."

Tips

  • Give the product a catchy slogan or tagline early in the writing process — it usually anchors the whole script and makes the ending land better.
  • Assign a narrator or announcer role even in a small team; a voiceover-style line delivery makes it feel more like a real commercial.
  • Keep the physical comedy simple — an exaggerated reaction shot or a dramatic close-up on the object gets more laughs than complicated blocking.
  • Great for team building: it forces quick creative collaboration under a real time limit, and performing together in front of the group builds shared confidence fast.
