Without speaking a single word, the whole group must arrange itself in order — by height, birthday month, or alphabetical first name — using only gestures and eye contact.

The Essentials

How to play

  1. Gather the whole group in an open space and announce a sorting category: height, birthday month and day, first name alphabetically, or years at the company — anything that has a clear order.
  2. From that moment, nobody may speak, whisper, mouth words, or write anything down.
  3. The group must arrange itself into a single line in the correct order using only gestures, hand signals, and eye contact.
  4. Once everyone agrees the line looks finished, call time and verify it out loud, person by person, from one end to the other.
  5. If a category with a genuinely fixed answer (like birthdays) comes out wrong, try again with a new category — the game rewards figuring out a shared gesture system, not perfection on the first attempt.

Tips

  • Start with an easy, low-stakes category (like height) before moving to date-based ones that require more improvised signaling.
  • Watch for a natural leader who starts organizing sub-groups — let that emerge rather than assigning it.
  • If the group gets stuck, a facilitator can add a rule (like allowing pointing at a spot on a number line) without breaking the silence.
  • Great for team building: it forces creative non-verbal communication and shows fast how well a group can coordinate without its usual verbal shortcuts.
