A crossword variant where each clue sits printed right inside its own answer cells instead of a separate numbered list, so words interlock in a chain rather than the classic black-and-white grid.

The Essentials

Steps

  • Scan the grid for clue cells you already know the answer to, and write that word into the connected empty cells.
  • Follow the little arrow printed in each clue cell — it shows whether the answer runs across or down from that point.
  • Use letters you've already filled in from crossing words as extra hints for the clues still open.
  • Work outward from your solved words, since each new answer often unlocks the clue cells around it.

Tips

  • Start with picture clues and short, obvious words — they're usually the fastest way in.
  • Keep a light pencil mark for guesses you're not fully sure of, so they're easy to fix later.
  • If a clue stumps you, skip it and come back once nearby words are filled in.
  • Scanwords lean on general knowledge and vocabulary more than pure wordplay, so a good dictionary or search engine can help when you're stuck.
