Rhyming Game

Rhyming Game

Min number of participants 2
Age 6+ yrs.
Safety support by adult Not required
Min duration 10 min.
Cost None (Free)
Environment Indoor / Outdoor

A wordplay game where one player calls out a word, and everyone else takes turns finding words that rhyme with it until no one can think of a new one — then a fresh word starts the next round.

The Essentials

Rules

  • One player picks a starting word, ideally something short and easy to rhyme with.
  • Going around in order, each player says a word that rhymes with it — no repeats allowed.
  • A player who can't think of a new rhyme within a few seconds is out for that round, or the round simply ends.
  • The last player to give a valid rhyme (or whoever is out last) picks the next starting word.

Tips

  • Made-up nonsense words are usually not allowed, but house rules can bend this for younger kids.
  • Near-rhymes (words that sound close but not exact) can be allowed for a more relaxed, kid-friendly version.
  • Keep a phone dictionary or thesaurus handy in case of disputes over whether a word truly rhymes.
