The Essentials

How to play

  1. Split into small teams of 3-5 and give each team a stack of newspaper and a roll of tape — nothing else.
  2. Set a build time of 20-30 minutes; one team member volunteers as the "model" while the rest design and construct a wearable outfit on them.
  3. The outfit must actually be worn and must let the model walk safely — no fully wrapped legs or restricted vision.
  4. Optionally give teams a theme (eveningwear, superhero, wedding dress) to design around, judged separately from the freeform round.
  5. Line up all the models and send them one at a time down a makeshift runway while everyone applauds and judges vote on categories like "most creative," "most wearable," and "best theme match."

Tips

  • Tape newspaper into rolled tubes or pleated strips before attaching — flat sheets tear and sag much faster than reinforced pieces.
  • Build the outfit directly on the model's body rather than off to the side, since paper armor and skirts need to move with a real person to actually work on the runway.
  • Keep scissors or a box cutter on hand for trimming, but assign only one person to handle it for safety.
  • Great for team building: it's silly, visual, and forces genuine creative collaboration — the runway walk afterward turns the whole group into an appreciative, laughing audience.
