Steps

  1. Mark the center point of your paper, then use a compass, round object, or ruler to draw a light guide circle.
  2. Divide the circle into equal sections (4, 6, 8, or 12) with faint pencil lines radiating out from the center, like slices of a pie.
  3. Draw a small pattern or shape within one section close to the center, then repeat it identically in every other section.
  4. Work outward in rings, adding a new repeating pattern in each ring before moving to the next one further from the center.
  5. Once the pencil design is complete, trace over it with pen, fine liner, or marker, then erase the remaining guide lines.
  6. Add color if desired, working symmetrically so each section matches the others.

Tips

  • Use a rotating turntable or simply rotate the paper as you work, since drawing toward yourself is more accurate than reaching across the page.
  • Keep your guide lines light so they erase cleanly once the final design is inked.
  • Start with simple geometric shapes like dots, petals, and triangles before attempting intricate detail, since complexity builds well on basic repeated elements.
