Place a leaf under paper, rub a crayon over it, and watch the pattern magically appear — a simple nature craft that teaches kids about plant structures while producing beautiful prints.

The Essentials

Steps

  1. Collect freshly fallen leaves with clear, raised veins; flat, dry leaves work best for a crisp texture.
  2. Place a leaf vein-side up on a hard, flat surface, then lay a sheet of thin paper over it.
  3. Hold the paper steady with one hand so it doesn't shift during rubbing.
  4. Rub the flat side of a peeled crayon firmly and evenly over the leaf, working from the center outward.
  5. Lift the paper carefully to reveal the leaf's vein pattern and outline.
  6. Repeat with different leaves and colors on the same sheet to build a layered composition.

Tips

  • Use the side of the crayon, not the tip, for even, broad coverage of the leaf's texture.
  • Choose thin paper, like printer paper or tracing paper, since thick paper won't pick up fine details.
  • Press with consistent pressure throughout the rub to avoid patchy or faded spots.
  • Try different leaf shapes and vein patterns to see how each creates a distinct texture.
  • Layer multiple leaf rubbings in different colors on one page for a richer, more textured piece.
