Kings Cup

Min number of participants 3
Age 18+ yrs.
Safety support Not required
Min duration 30 min.
Cost Low
Environment Indoor / Outdoor

A social drinking card game where each card drawn from the spread triggers its own rule — categories, rhymes, waterfalls, or pouring into the shared cup — building to a dramatic final king.

The Essentials

Rules

  • Spread a deck of cards face down in a circle around a central empty cup.
  • Players take turns drawing a card and following the action tied to its number, such as 2 for you pick who drinks, 5 for everyone drinks, or 8 for pick a mate who drinks whenever you do.
  • Kings usually require pouring a splash of your drink into the central cup, and whoever draws the fourth king must drink the whole thing.
  • Agree on the card meanings before you start, since house rules vary widely from group to group.
  • The game ends when the last king is drawn or the deck runs out.

Tips

  • Only play with alcohol among adults who are drinking responsibly, and always offer a non-alcoholic option for anyone who wants to opt out of drinking rounds.
  • Write down or agree on the card rules beforehand so there is no argument mid-game.
  • Assign a rule-keeper if the group is large, so everyone remembers the meanings correctly.
  • Pace drinks with water in between to stay comfortable through the whole game.
  • Keep an eye on anyone who seems to be drinking too fast, and encourage sipping rather than downing drinks.
