Steps

  1. Gather a cardboard tube, wax paper, a rubber band, and scissors or a hole punch.
  2. Cut a small hole about a third of the way along the tube, roughly the size of a coin.
  3. Cut a square of wax paper a little larger than the tube's end.
  4. Stretch the wax paper tightly over one end of the tube and secure it with the rubber band.
  5. Hum, do not blow, into the open end of the tube; the vibration of your voice against the wax paper creates the buzzing kazoo sound.
  6. Decorate the tube with paint, markers, or stickers before or after assembly.

Tips

  • Use a paper towel or toilet paper tube for a classic size and pitch.
  • Cover the hole loosely with a finger while humming to change the tone.
  • Replace the wax paper if it tears or loosens, since a taut membrane gives the clearest buzz.
  • Let any paint dry completely before adding the wax paper so the tube keeps its shape.
  • Practice humming familiar tunes; the kazoo works best with simple, steady melodies.
