The Essentials

How to play

  1. Stand in a circle of 8-15 people, shoulder to shoulder.
  2. Everyone reaches into the circle with both hands and grabs two different people's hands — never both hands of the same person, and never the hand of someone standing directly next to you.
  3. Once every hand is joined to someone else's, the group must untangle itself into a single circle (or sometimes two separate circles) purely by climbing over, ducking under, and twisting through each other.
  4. No one may let go of the hands they're holding at any point during the untangling.
  5. The group succeeds when everyone ends up in one continuous, unbroken circle (hand-holds may have crossed or rotated, that's fine).

Tips

  • Talk constantly — call out who's stepping over whom, since nobody can see the whole tangle from inside it.
  • If the knot seems truly impossible after a long struggle, it's fine to let go of one connection and rejoin hands differently rather than fighting a genuinely unsolvable configuration.
  • Go slowly with big groups; twisting an arm too far is uncomfortable, so communicate and move gently rather than forcing a step.
  • Great for team building: it forces everyone to communicate physically and mentally, and the whole group succeeds or fails together.
