Guess the Sound

Guess the Sound

Age 4+ yrs.
Safety support by adult Not required
Min duration 10 min.
Cost None (Free)
Environment Indoor / Outdoor

A vocal impression game where one player makes a sound effect — an animal, a vehicle, an everyday object — with just their voice, and everyone else races to guess what it is.

The Essentials

Rules

  • One player thinks of something to imitate — an animal, a vehicle, a machine, a household object — and makes its sound with their voice only.
  • Everyone else calls out guesses; the first to guess correctly wins that round.
  • The winner (or the sound-maker again, if no one guesses) picks the next sound to imitate.
  • Set a time limit per round so no one gets stuck if the sound is too obscure.

Tips

  • Start with easy, familiar sounds (dog, cat, car horn) before moving to trickier ones (a printer, a zipper, a kettle).
  • Encourage exaggeration — the funnier and more committed the impression, the easier and more entertaining it is to guess.
  • For younger kids, offer a couple of multiple-choice options if they're struggling.
