The Essentials

How to play

  1. Before the event, design a chain of 4-6 puzzles (a riddle, a cipher, a simple math problem, a picture clue) where solving each one reveals a number or word needed for the next step, ending in a final code.
  2. Hide the clues around one or two rooms and set up one or more small combination locks (on a box, a drawer, or a chain) set to the final code.
  3. Split players into teams and send them in, either staggered by a few minutes or simultaneously in separate rooms, with a strict time limit (30-45 minutes).
  4. Teams may only move to the next puzzle once they've solved the current one — no skipping ahead or guessing the final code outright.
  5. The team that opens the lock first, or gets furthest before time runs out, wins; reveal the intended solution path afterward for anyone who got stuck.

Tips

  • Test every puzzle yourself before the event — a clue that seems obvious to the writer is often genuinely unsolvable to someone seeing it cold.
  • Build in a hint system (a sealed envelope, a text message on request) so a stuck team doesn't just stall out and lose interest.
  • Vary the puzzle types across the chain (wordplay, logic, physical search, math) so different strengths in the group get to shine.
  • Great for team building: it's essentially a professional escape room's core mechanic recreated for free, and the shared problem-solving under a ticking clock builds real cooperative momentum.
