Cup Stacking Relay

Cup Stacking Relay

Min number of participants 4
Age 6+ yrs.
Safety support by adult Not required
Min duration 15 min.
Cost None (Free)
Environment Indoor / Outdoor

Teams race to stack and unstack a pyramid of plastic cups as fast as possible, tagging the next teammate to go — a quick, high-energy relay that rewards steady hands under pressure.

The Essentials

How to play

  1. Give each team an identical set of stacking cups (9 or 12 works well) at a table or on the floor at the start of a relay line.
  2. On "go," the first player runs to the cups, builds a standard pyramid (3-3-3 or 3-6-3 depending on cup count), then immediately unstacks it back into a single stack.
  3. Once the cups are fully unstacked, that player tags the next teammate, who repeats the same build-and-unstack sequence.
  4. Continue down the whole team roster; no skipping turns and no help from teammates during someone's turn.
  5. The first team to have every member complete a full stack-and-unstack cycle wins.

Tips

  • Practice the classic stacking pattern once before racing for real — building corner-cups-first is far faster than stacking randomly.
  • Unstacking (the "downstack") is where most time gets lost; teach the standard technique of collapsing cups two at a time rather than one by one.
  • Keep the cup set on a stable table, not a wobbly one — a shaky surface adds random delays that have nothing to do with skill.
  • Great for team building: it's short, loud, and highly replayable, so running several heats lets everyone see clear, fast improvement round to round.
