Mix baking soda, citric acid, and a few drops of oil and scent, then pack the fizzy dough into molds and let it dry — a satisfying kitchen-science project that ends with your own colorful bath bombs.

The Essentials

Mix the dry ingredients, mainly baking soda and citric acid, thoroughly before adding any liquid, since uneven mixing leaves pockets of pure citric acid that fizz on contact with skin instead of only in the bath water. Add the liquid ingredients, like oil and water or witch hazel, in a fine spray or a few drops at a time while stirring constantly, since pouring liquid in all at once triggers the fizzing reaction immediately and ruins the mixture before it can be molded. Test the mixture by squeezing a small amount in your hand, and only pack it into molds once it holds together like damp sand, since a mixture that is too wet activates too early and one that is too dry crumbles apart instead of holding its shape. Pack the mixture firmly into both mold halves, overfilling slightly, then press the halves together and hold for about thirty seconds before releasing, since a loosely packed bath bomb falls apart the moment it is removed from the mold. Let the molded bath bombs dry undisturbed for at least twenty-four hours before removing them from the molds or using them, since a bath bomb that is still damp inside will crumble or crack instead of holding together. Store finished bath bombs in an airtight container, since exposure to humidity in the air causes them to start fizzing and lose their effect before they ever reach the bath.
