Environment Indoor / Outdoor

Build a miniature scene from cardboard, paint, and scrap materials as a backdrop for your action figures, from a battlefield to a jungle hideout. A creative solo project that blends storytelling with hands-on building.

The Essentials

  • Choose a scene and scale that matches your action figures, then pick a base such as a wooden board, foam board, or plastic tray sized to fit your display.
  • Build up the landscape first using materials like foam, plaster, or textured paint to create hills, rubble, or flooring, and let each layer dry fully before adding the next.
  • Add larger background elements such as walls, buildings, or trees before placing your figures, since it is much easier to build the environment around empty space than to work around figures already in place.
  • Position your action figures last, using removable adhesive putty or figure stands to hold poses securely without permanently gluing them down, in case you want to rearrange or swap them out later.
  • Layer in small details like rocks, plants, or debris around the figures to add depth and make the scene feel lived-in rather than sparse.
  • Step back regularly to check the composition from the angle you plan to display or photograph it from, adjusting placement until the scene reads clearly as a whole.
