Design a digital model on your computer and watch a 3D printer build it layer by layer from plastic filament — 3D printing turns virtual designs into real objects you can hold, use, or modify, bridging digital creativity with physical making.

The Essentials

  • Start with a 3D model file, either downloaded from an online library or designed yourself in modeling software, and export it in a format your printer's software can read.
  • Load the model into slicing software, which converts the 3D shape into thin horizontal layers and generates the instructions your printer follows layer by layer.
  • Set the layer height, print speed, and support structures in the slicer based on the object's size and how much overhanging detail it has, since taller supports and finer layers take longer but improve accuracy.
  • Make sure the print bed is clean and level, and load the correct filament type for your project, since different materials need different temperatures.
  • Start the print and let the machine build the object layer by layer from the bottom up, checking occasionally that the first few layers are adhering properly, since a failed first layer usually ruins the whole print.
  • Once finished, let the object cool before removing it from the bed, then trim away any support material and sand rough edges for a cleaner finish.
