Environment Outdoor

Exploring rocky shoreline pools left behind by the receding tide to discover crabs, anemones, sea stars, and other small marine life — a hands-on nature activity best timed around low tide.

The Essentials

Steps

  • Check a tide table and head to the shore about an hour before low tide, when the most pools are exposed.
  • Walk carefully on wet rocks — they're slippery, so watch your footing rather than only looking down for creatures.
  • Peer into shallow pools without disturbing them; crabs, anemones, snails, and small fish often hide under ledges or seaweed.
  • If you gently lift a rock to look underneath, always place it back exactly as you found it to protect the habitat.
  • Leave every creature where it lives — observe with your eyes, not your hands, and never take shells with animals still in them.

Tips

  • Wear closed-toe water shoes with good grip; bare feet and flip-flops make slippery rocks risky.
  • Bring a small bucket of seawater if you want a closer look at something, then return it to the exact same spot within a minute or two.
  • Move slowly and quietly — sudden movement and shadows send anemones and fish into hiding.
  • Keep an eye on the incoming tide and your exit path so you're not caught out by rising water.
