Strap into a board and carve down snow-covered slopes — snowboarding is exhilarating, progressive, and endlessly improvable, combining physical balance and edge control with the freedom of riding mountain terrain.

The Essentials

How to get started

  1. Get properly fitted boots and a board sized for your height, weight, and stance (regular or goofy).
  2. Strap in and practice balancing on flat ground before heading to a slope.
  3. Learn to skate on flat ground with your front foot strapped in to get a feel for the board.
  4. On a gentle beginner slope, practice heel-side and toe-side turns, shifting your weight through the edges.
  5. Master the "falling leaf" technique — sliding side to side down the slope to control speed before linking turns.
  6. Always wear a helmet and wrist guards, and take a lesson if possible before riding lifts alone.
