Shine a torch on a white sheet in a darkened room and use your hands or cut-out figures to tell stories — an ancient art form that sparks storytelling, imagination, and family laughter.

The Essentials

Steps

  • Hang or stretch a plain white sheet, then set a bright light (a flashlight or lamp works) a few feet behind it.
  • Turn off the room lights so the sheet becomes a glowing screen.
  • Move your hands, fingers, or cut-out cardboard figures between the light and the sheet to cast shapes.
  • Keep performers close to the screen for sharp outlines and step back from the light for softer, larger shadows.

Tips

  • Practice a few hand shapes (a rabbit, a bird, a dog) in front of a mirror before the show.
  • Add a simple story or narrator to tie the shapes together into a tale.
  • Use background music or sound effects to build atmosphere.
  • Let kids design their own cut-out characters from cardboard and craft sticks.
