The Essentials

Rules

  • One person writes a message using a chosen cipher (letter-swap, number substitution, or a symbol key) and shares only the key with the code breaker's teammate, not the solver.
  • The solver must decode the message using only logic and pattern spotting, without being told the key in advance.
  • Score a point for each message cracked within an agreed time limit, then switch roles.

Tips

  • Start with simple shift ciphers where each letter moves a fixed number of places in the alphabet — easiest for beginners to both write and crack.
  • Keep early messages short (one sentence) so the pattern is learnable before moving to trickier ciphers.
  • Encourage kids to look for repeated symbols first — they often reveal common letters like E or vowels.
  • Write a shared key sheet and keep it hidden from the solver in a sealed envelope, opened only after a guess is made.
