Strolling together along a rocky beach to search for colourful frosted glass pieces worn smooth by the sea — a meditative slow treasure hunt that rewards keen eyes and patience.

The Essentials

Steps

  • Walk slowly along the tideline, scanning the wet sand and gravel for a frosted, non-shiny sparkle rather than clear glassy glints.
  • Check spots where waves deposit debris: the base of rocky outcrops, tide pools, and the high-tide wrack line.
  • Rub a suspected piece with a wet thumb — true sea glass feels smooth and satiny, never sharp at the edges.
  • Collect only loose pieces already tumbled free by the sea; leave attached or buried fragments undisturbed.

Tips

  • Go an hour after low tide, when the most sand and gravel is exposed but the surf hasn't buried fresh finds again.
  • Overcast light or a low sun angle makes frosted glass easier to spot than harsh midday sun.
  • Bring a small mesh bag or jar so wet pieces can drain instead of soaking your pockets.
  • Rare colors like red, orange, and purple are worth pointing out to kids as a bonus "treasure" find to keep them motivated.
