Craft hand puppets, sock puppets, or marionettes from fabric and foam — once finished, the real fun begins as characters come alive and impromptu shows take over the living room.

The Essentials

Steps

  • Choose a puppet type: sock, paper bag, or a simple hand puppet from felt
  • Cut felt or fabric into a body shape and stitch or glue the front and back together, leaving the bottom open for a hand
  • Glue on felt circles or buttons for eyes and cut felt for a mouth and nose
  • Add yarn or felt strips for hair, and fabric scraps for clothing details
  • Let the glue dry fully, then slip a hand inside and bring the character to life

Tips

  • Use hot glue for fabric and buttons, but let an adult handle the glue gun around young kids
  • Keep felt pieces simple and bold so the puppet reads clearly from across a room
  • Give each puppet a distinct voice and name before the show starts
  • Save leftover craft scraps in a box so future puppets are quick to build
