Centre clay on a wheel or hand-build bowls and sculptures — working with clay is grounding, tactile, and quietly absorbing, producing unique objects you can glaze, fire, and keep forever.

The Essentials

Basics

  1. Wedge the clay — knead it to remove air bubbles and give it an even, workable consistency.
  2. Centre the clay on the wheel (or, for hand-building, start with a slab, coil, or pinch base).
  3. Open the centred ball by pressing your thumbs into the middle to form the base of the vessel.
  4. Pull the walls up evenly, keeping consistent thickness as you shape the piece.
  5. Let the piece dry to "leather-hard," then trim the base and refine the shape.
  6. Fire the piece in a kiln (bisque fire), apply glaze, then fire again (glaze fire) to seal and finish it.
