Rules

  • Keep the car within the official size and weight limits (typically a maximum length, width, and a 5-ounce weight cap), since race officials weigh and measure every car before the event and disqualify any that exceed the limits.
  • Use only the wheels, axles, and block provided in the official kit, since swapping in outside parts is against the rules in most derby leagues and can get a car disqualified at inspection.
  • Keep wheels attached and the car free-rolling with no propulsion source (no motors, springs, or magnets), since pinewood derby cars are meant to race by gravity alone down the track.
  • Finish the car before the deadline set by the organizers, since late entries are typically not allowed to race regardless of how well-built the car is.

Tips
