Get up close with friendly goats, rabbits, sheep, and chickens at a petting zoo — feeding and touching farm animals gives young children a joyful, tactile connection with nature.

The Essentials

Rules

  • Approach animals slowly from the front where they can see you coming, since sudden movements or reaching from behind can startle even calm animals into kicking, biting, or fleeing.
  • Only feed animals with food provided by the petting zoo staff, since outside food (including seemingly harmless snacks) can cause serious digestive problems or even be toxic to farm animals.
  • Wash or sanitize your hands immediately after touching any animal and before eating or drinking anything, since farm animals commonly carry bacteria like E. coli and salmonella that spread easily through touch.
  • Keep young children within arm's reach at all times, since even gentle animals can react unpredictably if a child grabs, pulls, or startles them.

Tips

  • Let the animal sniff your hand before petting it, since this gives the animal a chance to get comfortable with you and reduces the odds of a startled reaction.
  • Pet animals with a flat, open palm along their body rather than patting their head, since head-patting can feel threatening to many animals while body strokes are generally read as calming.
  • Watch the animal's body language for signs of stress, like pinned-back ears, tensed muscles, or backing away, since these signal it's time to give the animal space rather than continuing to interact.
  • Avoid wearing dangling jewelry, scarves, or loose clothing during your visit, since curious animals may nibble or tug on these items, and they can get caught if an animal moves suddenly.
