Sketch a live model in a structured class — capturing the human figure in pencil, charcoal, or ink within set time intervals — life drawing is the foundational discipline of figurative art, training observation, proportion, and rapid mark-making.

The Essentials

Rules

  • Respect the model at all times; life drawing sessions require professionalism, not commentary on appearance.
  • Never photograph the model without explicit permission from both the model and the session organizer.
  • Follow the session's timed structure, which usually moves from short warm-up poses to longer, more detailed ones.
  • Stay quiet and focused during poses so the model and other artists can concentrate.

Tips

  • Start with quick gesture drawings of 30 seconds to 2 minutes to loosen up before longer poses.
  • Focus on proportions and the overall gesture of the pose first, then add detail once the basic structure feels right.
  • Use a full arm motion rather than just your wrist for looser, more confident lines.
  • Don't erase constantly; a few confident lines teach you more than endless corrections.
  • Attend regularly if possible, since life drawing skills, like anatomy and proportion, build steadily with consistent practice.
