Designing and constructing hats from felt, straw, or fabric using millinery techniques — shaping brims, blocking crowns, and adding trimmings to create wearable art.

The Essentials

  • Measure your head circumference before choosing a block or pattern, since a hat that's even half an inch off will never sit comfortably no matter how well it's finished.
  • Steam felt or straw before shaping it over a block, since dry material cracks and resists stretching while damp material molds smoothly.
  • Pin the material to the block firmly as you shape it, since it needs to dry fully in place or it will spring back to a flatter shape.
  • Work the brim evenly from the center outward, since uneven tension while shaping leaves one side wavy or misshapen compared to the other.
  • Let a blocked hat dry completely, usually a full day or more, before removing it from the block, since rushing this step undoes the shape you just built.
  • Add trim, ribbon, or embellishments only after the base shape is fully set, since sewing onto damp material can distort the hat as it finishes drying.
