Hand Sewing Practice

Hand Sewing Practice

Min number of participants 1
Age 8+ yrs.
Safety support by adult Not required
Min duration 30 min.
Cost Low
Environment Indoor / Outdoor

Grab a needle, thread, and some scrap fabric, and practice simple stitches like the running stitch and backstitch. Hand sewing builds patience and fine motor skills while you create your own little fabric projects.

The Essentials

  • Thread the needle and knot the end before you start, an unknotted thread pulls right through the fabric
  • Keep your stitches an even length, consistency matters more than speed when you are learning
  • Practice the running stitch first, it is the base for most other hand stitches you will learn later
  • Use a thimble on your pushing finger, pressing a needle through thick fabric without one can hurt
  • Hold the fabric taut but not stretched, loose fabric puckers and bunches as you sew
  • Snip loose threads close to the knot when you finish, stray threads unravel a seam over time

Printmaking

Printmaking

Carve a linoblock, screen a stencil, or etch a metal plate and roll ink across it to print multiple original artworks — printmaking is a democratic art form where the matrix can produce an edition of identical images, each one still a handmade original.
