Environment Outdoor

Explore natural cave systems underground — squeezing through passages, abseiling into chambers, and navigating by headtorch through formations of stalactites and stalagmites — caving accesses landscapes almost no one else ever sees.

The Essentials

  • Never go alone — always cave with at least three people, and tell someone above ground your planned route and return time.
  • Wear a helmet with a mounted headlamp plus one backup light source; total darkness underground is disorienting fast.
  • Go with a guide or club on your first trips until you know how to read passages and judge tight squeezes.
  • Move slowly and test footing on wet or muddy rock — most caving injuries are slips, not falls.
  • Never touch formations like stalactites; the oils on your skin stop their growth permanently.
  • Pack out everything you bring in, including any mud on your gear that could carry contaminants between cave systems.
