The Essentials

How to play

  1. Split into two teams and separate them into different rooms (or opposite corners with a visual barrier) so neither can see the other's work.
  2. Give both teams identical kits: craft sticks, tape, string, and paper, plus a shared specification — the total bridge length, height, and the gap it must span.
  3. Each team designs and builds only their half of the bridge, agreeing beforehand (before separating) on how the two halves will connect in the middle.
  4. Set a build time of 25-30 minutes, with no contact between teams once building starts.
  5. Bring both halves together over the gap at the end — the bridge succeeds if the two halves meet, align, and can support a small test weight (like a toy car) without collapsing.

Tips

  • Spend real time on the shared planning conversation before splitting up — most bridges fail to meet in the middle because teams assumed the other side would handle a detail that was never actually agreed on.
  • Agree on exact measurements and connection points (height, width, and how the ends will physically join), not just a general concept.
  • Build a bit of tolerance into your half's connection point — a design that only works if the other team is perfectly exact will usually fail.
  • Great for team building: it's a sharp lesson that a shared plan documented on paper beats a plan everyone just assumes they agree on.
